So, I am here to give you a few tips and hints on how to send in battle plans, in order to prevent you from crying bias or just seeing your army crushed against an enemy because your plans sucked! The battle plans I am talking about is in the midst of battle you should be pm'ing the current Battle Mod for your specific battle.(Probably me) Plans of how your troops advance, set-up as well as tactics.
This means that certain tactics should not be placed in your actual post in the battle. Rather they should be pm'ed to the battle mod at the time.
Break down your orders into paragraphs or sections, numbers numbers numbers.
Ex. Infantry unit- 500 units will advance on the enemy, directly. 500 will fortify a strong right flank and fill into any breaks in the main line.
Archer unit- Will follow up the left side of the line, shoot the initial barrage and retreat to (etc).
"What if" Scenarios will not be tolerated I do not want a novel from you on the massive amount of "If player does this I do X" scenarios. I will be treating "What if" scenarios as garbage and disregard anything to do with them. I am treating your soldiers as if they are actually military trained and disciplined. They will REACT to ambushes and traps etc etc. It is important for the commanding officers to set in orders.
Ex I will send my men to secure the East side of the map, AT ALL COST. (In this order, the units will fight tooth and nail to the death to fulfill their orders. I will send my men to secure the east, but if they are attacked they will counter attack. (In this order, the soldiers will be distracted from their main goal and in this case the plans might be fully changed because of lack of clarity)
Be realistic with your orders. 10,000 men will not cram into one gate in one turn. 5,000 cavalry can not ride in tight formation around a map. Archers can not SNIPE at far volley type range. Gates can not be beaten down with simple weapons. I know it is hard to place realism with game fantasy but stupid orders will fail. If wood is wet, It will not set on fire. Do not assume your task units will be protected, including your general!
Be clear with your orders, normally the simpler the better in most situation. A City gate undefended, will most likely be able to have any amount of troops pass through but a guarded or trapped gate Can suffer being blocked off. (if troops are waiting on the other side it depends on how the defense and offense orders of the respective armies behave) A blockaded gate can cut off all advancement.
As for terrain playing into effect:
Depends on multiple factors. Unmounted units will move at a approx 60-75% from their typical movement rate. Mounted units (unless ordered to charge- Kicks this up to 100%-125) 80-95% of typical movement speed. If the hill is grass, rock, mud or trapped then that also factors in. IF the infantry are ordered in tight formation (Shield walled) to prevent artillery barrage their movement is also slowed. IF units clash with them on the down hill, the units charging down would have the advantage EXCEPT for ranged.
Cavalry charging down on Infantry, Cav wins Infantry charging down on Infantry, Infantry on the downhill would have advantage (They can brace and maneuver themselves easier) Cavalry charging uphill into Infantry/archers- Archers/infantry would have advantage. (Cavalry is better used downhill or in open flat terrain)
Lots of stuff is situational and no "set" rule can be called because no battle is ever the same. At least not from what I have seen.
Expect bloodshed
This type of warfare is bloody and brutal and people will die in mass if they are not given proper orders.
