Nosuke placed his hand on the young girls forehead as she lie ill in bed. Her parents watched him work from a short distance away, worry evident on their faces. They had tried everything to cure this strange illness that had stricken their daughter and nothing had worked. Finally after a passing doctor could not figure out what was wrong with her they decided it had to be a demonic illness. Thus when they heard a monk was in town they contacted Nosuke quickly.
As usual Nosuke was happy to help and appeared at their doorway as soon as time allowed him. Thus he was now in their daughter's room checking for any demonic presence.
"She is very ill as you told me. I must work quickly to see if any demonic entities are residing here. Please, give me space to work," Nosuke told the parents. For a long time they said nothing as they pondered what to do. Eventually the husband nodded and took his wife with him to the front room.
Nosuke withdrew a Sutra from his robe and placed it on the girl's head. A spark of spiritual energy erupted from it confirming the demonic presence.
"Ancient evil get thee hence. Only good can recompense for the sinful deeds which thou hast done. Demon cast thyself from mortal flesh and bone; return from whence you come!" Nosuke commanded loudly. The sutra sparked once again and a ghastly grey spiritual aura was from the girl's body.
"You may have one this day monk, but we will always be here to corrupt you at your weakest hour," the demon laugh darkly before dissipating entirely.
"And we shall be there when you try," Nosuke said to the now silent room.
The monk turned and made his way into the front room where the young girl's parents were waiting. When he told them the demon was gone the wife broke into tears of joy and the husband shook Nosuke's hand fervently.
"I can't thank you enough for saving my daughter. I don't know what I would have don't if you hadn't come," the husband said.
"Not at all. I was happy to do it. Do we not all have an obligation to leave the world better than we found it?" Nosuke responded.
"Indeed, but you could have kept going an not even bother with us. You didn't have to save her. For that I thank you," the husband contended.
"There is only one thing we can truly control in this world. Whether or not we are good or evil. I did only what any good man who is able should. Nothing more nothing less good sir. Now, I will take my leave. Have a pleasant day," Nosuke replied and left through the front entrance.
Upon exiting the home he was surrounded by a group of cheering villagers.
"He expelled the Demon!" one of them cried.
"He's a hero!" another said.
More of the villager continued to shout praises and Nosuke smiled just a little. After the cheering died down Nosuke thanked them.
"I am honored by your praise, but as I said before I only did what was right. I am glad of your hospitality. Now I must be moving on," he said.
A we well dressed man stepped from the crowd who appeared to be some kind of noble if similarly well off. He too shook Nosuke's hand.
"I must thank you on behalf of my people. You will be recognized as a hero in my fair city from this day forth, but where will you go from here?" he asked.
"I go where I am needed," Nosuke replied.
"Times are dangerous. Do you travel alone? If so I'll assign some men to guard you in your travels. I won't take no for an answer," the man said.
"Very well," Nosuke replied seeing no way to refuse the man. So Nosuke spent the night in the city and the next morning he left with the men assigned to guard him for the next people who may need him. He just hoped people wouldn't misunderstand the presence of the guards.
